Calling an article a global industry report creates a reasonable expectation: a defined market, a method, comparable data, and sources that another researcher can inspect. The commercial cooking-robot category did not meet that standard in public data for 2025. We found restaurant-industry statistics, a broad service-robot dataset, government support for catering automation, and a growing variety of machines. We did not find an authoritative worldwide count of cooking robots sold, installed, or operating.

That does not mean the category is imaginary or unimportant. It means the honest report is narrower. This review asks what the available evidence actually establishes, what can be learned from representative Chinese equipment, and which claims international buyers should still treat as unproven. It deliberately excludes syndicated market-size estimates whose category definitions and underlying samples cannot be examined.

Method and scope

Research cut-off: 31 December 2025. The review uses public data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, China's State Council, the National Restaurant Association in the United States, and the International Federation of Robotics, together with seven representative product dossiers currently documented on this website. It is a market review, not a supplier census, shipment survey, or investment forecast.

The product review covers compact single-wok, four-wok, tower, drum, kettle-wok, paddle-wok, and enclosed box formats. Those examples show that the market contains materially different architectures, capacities, cooking movements, and automation levels. They do not show how many units each supplier sold, how long the machines remained in service, or what share of restaurants adopted them. Product availability and market adoption are different questions.

Supplier claims are treated as claims unless they can be connected to a specific documented configuration. Terms such as AI cooking, cloud management, automatic cleaning, precision control, and large-batch output are not accepted as category-wide facts. The same rule applies to payback periods: without project cost, local labor assumptions, utilization, and measured operating results, a return-on-investment number is marketing rather than evidence.

The numbers establish context, not cooking-robot adoption

China's National Bureau of Statistics reported 2025 catering revenue of RMB 5.7982 trillion, up 3.2% from 2024. That confirms the size and continued growth of the domestic foodservice environment in which Chinese equipment manufacturers operate. It does not reveal how much restaurants spent on automation, which cooking technologies they adopted, or whether robots contributed to the growth.

China's policy direction is clearer than its adoption data. A 2024 State Council publication from nine departments encouraged research and application of artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, and intelligent equipment in catering, and allowed local support for digital transformation and automated catering equipment. This is meaningful institutional support for experimentation. It is not evidence that automated cooking became normal in 2025.

The United States presents a different operating context. In its March 2025 discussion of the State of the Restaurant Industry report, the National Restaurant Association identified food and labor costs, competition, and inflation as major pressures; its research executive said roughly nine in ten operators expected a highly competitive year. These pressures can make automation worth evaluating, but the report does not establish that cooking robots are the answer, or that restaurants deploying them achieved a particular payback.

The International Federation of Robotics provides the best global robot context, and also shows the measurement problem. Its World Robotics 2025 release recorded almost 200,000 professional service robots sold in 2024, up 9%. More than 42,000 were classified as hospitality robots, down 11%, but the majority in that category were mobile guidance, information-point, or telepresence robots. Food-and-beverage preparation appeared as an emerging application, not a separately reported cooking-robot market. A hospitality-robot total therefore cannot be relabelled as cooking-robot sales.

The equipment catalogue was ahead of the evidence base

By 2025, buyers could compare real commercial hardware rather than a single futuristic concept. The representative Chinese products reviewed for this article ranged from a 2.5 kg countertop cooking cell to a drum with a documented 10 kg recommended batch, alongside multi-wok and vertically integrated designs. Recipe storage, temperature sensing, automated movement, and electromagnetic heating appeared across multiple examples.

The similarities end quickly. Automatic ingredient feeding, liquid or powder dosing, automatic washing, drainage, and smoke management depend on the exact model. Even published kilogram figures describe different things: a maximum vessel load, an output range, or a recommended working batch. A buyer cannot move a capacity number from one architecture to another and call it a market benchmark.

Digital capability was equally uneven. Recipe files and program development were widely offered, and some suppliers described remote recipe management or cloud libraries. Overseas usability remained a separate question: account creation, interface language, server access, subscriptions, data ownership, and what happens when the connection is unavailable all need confirmation. Cloud connectivity should not have been described as a universal standard.

The strongest evidence for AI was weaker still. A machine that follows a programmed temperature curve, changes power in response to a sensor, or runs a stored recipe can be sophisticated automation without being an adaptive AI system. To support an AI claim, a supplier should be able to identify the input the system observes, the decision it changes, the permissible range, and a test showing an improved result. A label on a control screen is not enough.

What 2025 revealed—and what it did not

The defensible conclusion is that 2025 broadened the set of commercially presented cooking-robot formats and placed them inside a restaurant market already interested in digital and automated equipment. It also made the boundary of the category harder to see. A compact stir-fry cell, a four-wok line, and a large drum may all be called cooking robots while solving different production problems.

Overseas interest was real but should not be confused with adoption statistics. Questions received from outside China came especially from the United States and Europe, and focused on whether the food would be acceptable, which model fitted the kitchen, how recipes were developed, and how installation and after-sales support would work. Those inquiries establish buyer concerns; they do not establish sales volume or market share.

Several claims in the former version of this article could not survive verification. There is no basis here for saying most restaurants recover their investment in three to eight months, that cloud connectivity was standard, that cooking robots became an operational necessity in 2025, or that automated cooking will be the default by 2030. Each may be possible in a particular project or future scenario, but none is a finding of the evidence reviewed.

The data gap is itself commercially important. A young category with limited shipment data, inconsistent naming, and supplier-specific performance asks more of the buyer. Equipment due diligence has to replace the confidence that, in a mature category, might come from standards, installed-base data, independent tests, and a dense local service network.

A claim-and-evidence test for buyers

A professional comparison does not prohibit ambitious claims. It asks what evidence would make each claim useful. The following test is more reliable than a generic market-growth chart.

This evidence can come from different places. A supplier can document the configuration and demonstrate the food. A qualified local contractor can verify utilities and installation. A compliance specialist can review the technical file. The restaurant supplies the only credible operating baseline for its own return calculation. No single party should be asked to guess all four.

The honest conclusion from 2025

Commercial cooking robots finished 2025 as a real but poorly measured equipment category. Chinese suppliers could offer a meaningful range of working architectures, while restaurant economics and public policy created reasons to investigate automation. Public evidence did not show that the category had crossed a global inflection point.

For an international buyer, this is not a reason to wait automatically or to buy early automatically. It is a reason to narrow the question. Identify the food and production problem, compare architectures that fit the site, test the complete cycle, and demand evidence for digital, compliance, and support claims. The category becomes easier to understand when each project is treated as an operating system to be commissioned, not a trend to be believed.
